The Top 8 Essential Oils for Emotional Healing

Sharing is caring

In order to access and release emotional trauma, we must stimulate the amygdala.  One way to do this is through the sense of smell. Using certain essential oils for emotional healing can help tremendously.

Smell is the only one of our five senses that is directly linked to the lobe of the brain that houses our emotions and is shown to have a direct effect on the limbic system.  Along with all positive emotions, negative emotions such as fear, anger, depression, and anxiety originate from this area.

Many people turn to prescription drugs to find relief from uncomfortable psychological symptoms, but because of pharmaceuticals’ strange, unnatural design, they will always disrupt certain other bodily functions. Thus, you always have some side effects.

Essential Oils address symptoms at a cellular level by deleting misinformation and reprogramming correct information so that cells function properly and in harmony with one another.

Suppressed emotions and memories can lead to anxiety, panic attacks, and depression.  Essential oils can help us surface and release these negative emotions from wherever they are stored in our cells or energy field.  Each one has its own set of special properties. You can combine them for a tailored solution to whatever health concerns you may have—and they are especially effective when used in conjunction with other healing modalities such as energy healing, guided meditation, and massage therapy.

Top Eight Essential Oils for Emotional Healing and Alleviating Trauma

1 – Basil

Basil essential oil is helpful in dealing with feelings of anxiety, panic, or apprehension, and has been said to be the oil of “renewal”, both emotionally and spiritually. It provides strength and tranquility to the heart and mind, making it perfect for overwhelm, stress, fatigue, and may even assist a person in their efforts to overcome addiction–which makes it a great choice for overcoming ruminating thoughts and self-sabotaging behaviors that often result from toxic relationships.

2 – Cedarwood

Cedarwood oil is a great oil for times of crisis or sudden change, such as when there is an adjustment in households, jobs, and/or relationships.  These events often lead to feeling isolated or knocked off balance.  Cedarwood provides feelings of stability and grounding when external circumstances threaten your feelings of stability.  It also helps lessen fears that deter your ability to realize your potential. On an everyday basis, diffusing Cedarwood can increase your stamina and help you stay more focused, lively and hopeful.

3 – Lavender

Lavender essential oil is useful for a variety of emotional conditions.  It has been proven beneficial for anxiety, depression, irritability, panic attacks, and stress reduction.  Researchers at the University of Miami found that inhalation of lavender oil enhanced beta waves in the brain, suggesting improved relaxation!  On a spiritual level, lavender essential oil lifts the weight of depression and sadness, bringing an emotional balance to the soul.

4 – Inner Child

Coming to acceptance allows peace to grow within. When we can release feelings of rejection, transformation is more likely occur.  This oil releases stress from our mental, emotional and physical bodies, soothing our wounds.  Inner Child has a virtuous quality and is helpful for Inner Child work, particularly when addressing feelings of abandonment, which can be triggered during the course of and aftermath of toxic relationships.

Spiritually, Inner Child brings peace, love and acceptance to the self. It can also relieve feelings of shock and grief, while opening intuition and receptivity.

5 – Bergamot

Bergamot helps us transfer love back to ourselves. We can be so fixated on wanting other people to make us happy that we forget we can do that for ourselves.  Bergamot is uplifting, has natural anti-depressant properties, and helps us to relax and regain self-confidence again.

Bergamot oil helps us in the areas of self-love, self-worth, self-acceptance, self-judgment, and self-loathing. This oil helps do the work necessary to step out of one’s fears of not being good enough, and habits of holding back for fear of rejection. It instills validation within, allowing us to accept our own authenticity, and not spend so much time worrying about the opinions of others.

It also helps us in processing and releasing fear, blame, the need for approval, toxic shame, and emotional anguish. It may also relieve feelings of incompetence, inadequacy, or worthlessness by helping us step into our own confidence and empowerment.

6 – Frankincense

In addition to alleviating and eliminating depression, Frankincense is known as the “Oil of Truth”, revealing deceptiveness and false truths. It invites the individual to let go of lower vibrations, insults, and negativity. This oil helps create new perspectives based on integrity and enlightenment.

Frankincense is a powerful cleanser of the spirit. It assists in removing malevolent energies attached to a person, allowing them to open to enlightenment.  Addresses the emotions of abandonment and spiritual disconnectedness.

7 – Hyssop

Hyssop is a holy herb that awakens the heart, bringing acceptance while encouraging unconditional love towards the self. Hyssop enables clarity of spirit, encouraging emotional connection and well-being.

Hyssop essential oil is used for elimination of emotional uncleanliness, assisting in the removal of the legacy of guilt and fear of a generational nature. It is purifying for those who believe they have sins that need to be forgiven.  It releases judgment of self and others, as well as old, limiting beliefs that no longer serve one’s spiritual path.

8 – Melissa (a.k.a. Lemon Balm)

Melissa is the ultimate oil for emotional detox and combating stress and overwhelm.  On a spiritual and emotional realm, Lemon Balm has been used for centuries to harmonize the mind and body. It will help those who are Highly Sensitive (HSPs) and are prone to emotionally shutting down.

Using Lemon balm will restore clarity and generate support and balance to the spirit so one may have a positive outlook on their life and well-being.

Where to Buy

There are many companies from which you can purchase essential oils, but not all oils are created equal.  I prefer Young Living because they are therapeutic-grade and Earth Kosher Certified.

Safety measures

It’s possible that not all essential oils will provide the same level of benefit for all individuals. Past memories associated with particular scents can have a positive or negative effect.  Do not force yourself to use an oil that stimulates negative feelings or that you don’t like the scent of, even if it is one that is listed as being beneficial for a particular symptom.

Do not ingest or apply essential oils if you are on medications without first checking with your physician. Only use pure, certified organic oils for topical application, teas, or tinctures.

I’m particularly fond of bergamot and lavender and on reading your guide it becomes clear why. I have some things to release from my childhood and these scents are really powerful aids for that. Thank you.

Thank you for this concise information! I cannot thank you enough for putting this together. I have purchased many of these oils from MRH but only tonight I was put into a situation where I needed a solution to pent up and buried emotions in a loved one. I had been using frankincense on her as she has cancer, not realizing the emotional benefits, but now will be adding these others to help her shed past hurts. Your site was the perfect answer. Blessings on you and your work.

Hi can you rrecommend how to blend them ie how many drops of each

    Hi Lu,

Thanks for reading my article and for commenting. It kind of depends on how much carrier oil you use. A good rule of thumb is to add 12 drops of essential oil to each fl. ounce (30 ml) of cold pressed carrier oil.

    Hope that helps 🙂

So how does one pick the ones that will help?? Buy all of the eight? Smell them? Apply to skin…apply all the oils at once??

Hi Teri. Good question. I use them mostly for aromatherapy and diffuse them in a diffuser. I also sprinkle them on my bedsheets before going to bed. Alternately, you can simply sniff straight from the bottle or put a dot on your palm and sniff from your palm.

You can apply them topically, as well, but if you have sensitive skin, you’d need to dilute them with a carrier oil.

You wouldn’t need to buy all eight at once. You could review the healing properties and then choose one that you believe would address your needs, and build up your stock as you go along.

I also use them in body care products like lotions and creams…

Do you recommend applying them to skin, ingesting them, or letting them run in an oil diffuser?

Hi Katie! You can apply topically, but you may need to blend with a carrier oil if you have sensitive skin. I diffuse these oils, as well…just about every day, and also sprinkle certain ones on my bed at bedtime. As far as ingesting them, you’d want to be careful in that you should only use organic, pure oils and also check with your doctor if you’re taking any medications.
